CBT - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
One of the main coaching models that I use in coaching is CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy).
Despite its technical sounding name, CBT is a simple practical set of techniques for helping people to deal with negative or difficult thoughts and feelings. It helps you to clarify for yourself when your negative thinking patterns are generating anxiety or stress or impeding your ability to act positively and then to train yourself to think in more positive and constructive ways so that you can increase your effectiveness in life or relationships.

Does Coaching Work?
The techniques that I use to help people progress are based on research into the methods and strategies that are most helpful for people to make positive and real changes. I also ask clients to evaluate their progress in terms of increased satisfaction levels after a short period of coaching (5-6 coaching sessions in most cases) compared with satisfaction levels before the coaching.

How Does Life Coaching differ from Counselling?
I am a life coach who specialises working with people suffering from stress, anxiety, low self esteem or related difficulties, so there is some overlap with counsellors in the client group that I coach. Nonethelss there are significant differences between the service that I offer and that offered by traditional counsellors or psychotherapists. In fact a number of clients have come to me after having counselling who did not find the counselling to be particularly effective but have then found the life coaching that I provide to be both constructive and productive.
Traditional psychoanalytical counselling delves at length into a person's past and comes up with explanations of why a person acts in a certain way often to fit preconceived theoretical assumptions of the counselling model. By contrast:
- Life coaching has a practical focus. I teach relatively simple effective strategies to help you solve problems and overcome negative thought patterns which can leave you feeling under pressure.
- I use techniques for problem solving and helping people which have been shown by research to produce results. I have been trained in cognitive behavioural techniques which research confirms are effective in dealing with stress, anxiety, panic and depression. These techniques are also proven to be helpful in dealing with negative thought patterns.
- I work in a pragmatic way, helping clients to move forward, focusing primarily on how to create a brighter future for you rather than delving into a painful past or difficult emotions.
- Some counsellors and psychotherapists have an indefinite number of sessions with clients stretching over a long period, sometimes years. This may not be cost effective. By contrast, I offer the option of a short series of focused life coaching sessions or even a one-off coaching session where this is appropriate.
- Counselling
and
psychotherapy are usually carried out face to face, whereas life
coaching has the benefit of being done over the
phone usually. Advantages of telephone coaching sessions are:
- If you are meeting someone face to face, there are potential risks to your security which are not present over the telephone.
- It is important for the effectiveness of work that professional boundaries are maintained between professional adviser (whether counsellor or coach) and client. Telephone coaching sessions facilitate the setting of effective boundaries as there is no need to address boundaries issues that can arise from the physical proximity involved in face to face sessions.
- Telephone coaching sessions are not so time consuming as face to face meetings because no travel to and from the session is required
- Geographical distance is not an issue with coaching by phone- a service can be provided internationally.
How Does a Life Coaching with CBT Session Work?
Before the first telephone life coaching session I email you a short questionnaire which gives you the opportunity to describe the issues that you would like help with and also asks you to assess your satisfaction across a number of different areas and rate their importance to you. We use your responses on the questionnaire as the starting point for our discussion in the coaching session.
For the coaching session you call me at an agreed time (you call the phone number at the top of this page or my Skype details can be provided on request if you prefer to use Skype). In the coaching session:
- You get the opportunity to express how you are feeling, the concerns or goals that you would like help with and any of your own thoughts as to your options
- I will talk through your options with you and introduce to coaching exercises or techniques that may help in your situation
- At the end of the coaching session we will agree specific actions for you to try out to help you to move forward on the issues and I may provide 'homework' assignments for you to complete to help you deal with specific problems if appropriate
- Depending on which coaching option you include I may provide you with a Project Plan setting out your desired outcomes and the actions that we agree you will try out before the next coaching session - we can then review your progress at each coaching session.

International Coaching - Time Zone Differences
My coaching sessions can start any time between 9.30am and 6.30pm on a weekday in UK time. If you live outside the UK then please check what the time difference is from the UK to where you live and let me know where you live when we arrange a time so that we can be sure we both know what time has been arranged!
If you live in the USA or Canada then the time difference means that the coaching session is likely to be in the morning or at lunch time your time.
If you live in Asia then the coaching session is more likely to be later in the day your time because of the time difference.
For countries in Africa and Europe the time difference may be relatively small so it may be possible to arrange a coaching session morning, afternoon or evening to suit your convenience.
If you live in Australia or New Zealand I would suggest that you email me first at dbc@davidbonham-carter.com to see whether a mutually convenient time will be possible as the difference in time zone with these countries can make it difficult to arrange a coaching session for people living in Australia or New Zealand.
Life Coaching with CBT - Fee Options
My current fees are £45-£65 per session depending on the number of sessions you book in advance and the length of each session (you can choose either 1 Hour or 45 minute sessions & you can book sessions individually or in blocks).
Currency: Fees are in pounds sterling. They will be converted into your local currency by your credit/debit card company or Paypal at the exchange rate they are using at the time of the transaction.
