Marketing for Life Coaches
You can be the best life coach ever but if no one knows about you then you will not be able to make a profitable business from life coaching.
There are numerous ways in which you can get yourself known as a life coach. Some of them cost a lot of money and some of them are completely free.
My first tip would be that if you are paying out a lot of money on marketing for your business, then make sure that you analyse whether it is cost effective for you - i.e. whether it generates the outcomes (financial or otherwise) that make it worthwhile for you to continue to invest in it.
If it turns out not to be cost efffective then stop it or change it.
Also be aware that once you get an internet presence you may well find that you get a lot of unsolicited email (or phone calls) from people offering to market your service in one way or another - for a substantial fee.
If you are going to consider any such offers (and I would be wary of most of them) then make sure that you evaluate them carefully and I would advise you not to commit to something immediately - if someone is pressurising you into making an instant decision then usually the best decision is 'No'.
My advice would be to start off by trying out some forms of free or low cost marketing, including:
- Developing your own website and adding good content to it regularly
- Registering your website online in relevant free or low cost directories on the internet
- Starting up an email newsletter which people can sign up to you on your website and using it to give useful free information whilst also promoting your services and products
- Putting up leaflets or notices about your services and products in places potential customers might visit
- Submitting articles for magazines or online publications or article directories and including details of your service - but beware of publications approaching you and offering you space for articles for a fee. You may well find that you will be able to publish your articles elsewhere for free if the magazine or newspaper feels that the content you offer will appeal to its readers (and if it won't, then there's not much point in writing in the magazine or newspaper anyway).
- Ensuring that any contacts or friends are aware of the service you offer and the benefits it can give and encouraging them in a reasonable way to refer anyone who might be suitable
There is a sense in which none of the above options is free: they involve use of your time. Try to use your time effectively and efficiently. If you really think that it will be more cost effective to pay someone else to do some of the above tasks then consider that - for most people however carrying out the above tasks will give you useful initial hands on experience and relevant skills as well as saving you unnecessary expense.
One method of marketing which I personally found not to be cost effective was paying for advertisements in magazines. By all means try it for yourself, but my personal experience was that it didn't generate customers.
