Assertion Sandwich
What is an Assertion Sandwich?
An assertion sandwich is a way of expressing criticism which involves sandwiching the negative or critical comment in between two positive comments.
Example:
You are in charge of managing someone who has to produce an important report at work. On reading their first draft you see that it is too lengthy and verbose. How can you use an assertion sandwich to criticise them in a constructive way that encourages them to improve the report? Here is an example of what you might say:
1. 'Thanks for all your work on the draft report. I think it analyses really well the important issues' (Positive comment).
2.' It would probably be improved even further if you could shorten chapters 3-5, focusing on highighting in them what you see as the key points' (Negative comment framed in a constructive way).
3. 'The conclusion reads excellently and overall the report is impressive.' (Positive comment)
Benefits of Using an Assertion Sandwich
Used well the assertion sandwich technique can help you to get across a criticism in a constructive way which reduces the chances of the person on the receiving end of the criticism feeling attacked or undermined and reacting defensively. Ideally they may even feel supported or helped by the constructive approach and the elements of encouragement in the praise that surround the criticism. Of course you can't guarantee this, but it's often worth a try!
